The Famous Five- Five Go Off to Camp

The children, Anne, Julian, Dick and George who was a girl but she did not respond if anyone called her Georgina, had planned to go to the moorlands for their vacations. And were discussing about it. They had to go with Mr. Luffy who was probably expected by the adults to keep an eye on the children but Julian thought that he’ll forget about them once he settled down in his tent and would be lost in himself all day. They had started their journey to the moors after a few days and had found that Mr. Luffy was a horrible driver. The next day Julian was the first to wake up but fell asleep again and was awakened by Timmy. The children other than Anne (who liked taking care of household things) went to the farm to get milk and other things they came back and told Anne that the farmer was rich, he had a fine car and the farm had jolly good farm machinery. He had a son, Jock. They had their lunch on a hill top, they heard rumbling, Anne was scared and George turned quite pale. However, the boys were laughing, they said that it was just the trains underground. They reached a yard and started playing with the train trucks and the boys pushed hard at one as it crashed into the buffers of another and made a terrific noise in the silent yard. There was a tiny hut at the side of the yard. The door flew open and a one-legged man came out and said in a husky, hoarse whisper, there are spook trains here and asked whether they were really here or is he seeing things. After talking to wooden-leg Sam for sometime they left the yard. The next morning, they visited the farm this time with Anne to enquire about the spook trains and to get some bread and other things. There they got to know more about Jock, he had lived on two farms first on Owl Farm but shifted when his father died and lived in a town for a year and then came to the moors. He had a stepfather, who was not a farmer though. They had their dinner at the farm and soon Mr. Andrews joined them and they discussed the spook trains with him and he seemed to be behaving rather oddly on the whole spook train story. Next day the children waited all they long for Jock to turn up but he didn’t. So, the day was a boring one hanging out here and there in the camp. They slept, but Dick woke up sometime later as he felt something brush outside his tent. It was Jock and Timmy, Jock told he couldn’t come because his stepfather wanted him to go somewhere with him and could not come for the next day either. In the morning Anne was shocked to see her larder full of food and George understood that Jock had come the previous night and the boys had planned something and suspected that they will leave George behind with Anne and go to explore more about the spook trains. The day passed pleasantly enough and that night Jock came and the boys went to the yard, they went into the tunnel and soon heard a noise, it was growing louder and louder. Out from the tunnel came something long and black, passed quickly and was gone. They started walking towards the yard when suddenly Dick sprained his ankle. It took twenty minutes for Dick’s ankle to be strong again. They started to walk slowly and heard rumbling again and the train passed them again, so they returned back. Was it really a spook train!! I am sure George was pretty angry. Or something very bigger than they thought? What do you think? Read the book to find out more.
